Movember Test Match at Cobham Oval

  • Seddon Cricket Club is all about providing unique and memorable cricket experiences to our members and one of our marquee events starts tomorrow at Cobham Oval, Whangarei.

The 2nd edition of the annual FIVE DAY MOVEMBER TEST MATCH promises to be bigger and better than last year! Members of Cobham Cricket Club have been working tirelessly in the background to ensure that this is an unforgettable experience for everyone that is involved.

On Thursday night, some of Northlands finest former and present rugby players will go head-to-head with the Alternative Commentary Collective in a 20/20 match, also on Cobham Oval.

On Friday, Cobham Cricket Club are hosting a fundraising luncheon that is SOLD OUT with just over 130 guests expected. This event will be attended by some of the greats of Northland Cricket, including Dion Nash, Bryan Young, Alex Tait, Neal Parlane and organizer Joey Yovich.

This concept was created two years ago by Seddon Cricket Club. The club felt that cricketers only play a Five Day Cricket Match if they were an International Cricketer. So we thought we’d create an opportunity for the weekend warrior to do the same! People train for marathons, triathlons and other lengthy endurance events so we felt this is crickets equivalent!

The Movember Test will be played under legitimate playing conditions – 90 overs a day and two innings per side.

We would like to thank Movember for sharing this vision with us. When we took the concept to Movember CEO, Robert Dunne, he welcomed the idea with open arms - through this cricket platform Movember have done an incredible job promoting awareness around Men’s Health.

Last Movember (2022) this match raised 19k. All proceeds went to Men’s Health Aawareness. We are looking to raise a similar amount this year, if not more.

Good luck to all the players on both teams!

    ——————————————

So much to be grateful for over the past five days. It was an honour and privilege to lead the Movember CC into battle again for the Tashes.

To the Seddon Cricket Club team. It was fantastic to once again go into battle against you. The spirit of the game was upheld. Some awesome performances from the young guns (and not so young ones too).

The game ended up being a lot closer than many thought it would be after the first innings. One thing I have learnt is not to listen to locals when going out to the toss eh Andrew Golightly

On that note though to the Movember Cricket Club lads the fight you showed was the true testament of the people you are.

So many things throughout the test will stick with me for a long time to come in no particular order

    1. Believe in the leave going viral

    2. Being hit for an all run 5 in the T20

    3. Making history with The Alternative Commentary Collective in winning said T20

    4. Forging new connections and building on old

    5. Playing on the amazing 'Lord' Cobham Oval and being hosted by Cobham Cricket Club - Northland

    6. Scoring my first 50 for the Movember CC

    7. Helping raise over $12k for Movember New Zealand

    8. Making history with the first Test at Cobham Oval

    9. Handing Steven Pearson the Mo Blade for most fundraised over Movember

    10. Chatting to Lou

    11. And so so much more.

But there is one thing that I will take with me for the rest of my life and that was sitting in the sheds with the team after the game and hearing their "why". There was so much power in that moment. Sport can and is the catalyst to be extremely powerful for health - mental and physical.

So many people to thank but to Seddon Cricket Club and Robert Dunne for being a part of helping me love the game of cricket again. What you guys do for the community is absolutely amazing.

Joey and Andrew thank you for hosting us. Words can't describe how grateful I am.

To everyone who donated. I am humbled. I know full well things are tough at the moment but you put your hand in your pocket and donated. For that I'm grateful.

If you would like to still donate you can. Below is the link to my Mo-space
